On Capitol Hill, there is an ongoing immigration dispute. Republicans have been instructed by the former president Donald Trump not to negotiate a border policy with Democrats. The Oklahoma Republican Party has now sworn to no longer back a senator who is in favor of a bipartisan deal to maintain national security.
On January 27, the Oklahoma Republican Party decided to formally reprimand Senator James Lankford (R-OK) for his efforts in seeking a bipartisan agreement on border-related matters. The senator has been working to broker a deal that can successfully navigate the Democratic-controlled Senate and gain approval from President Joe Biden. The objective is to ensure the safety of the United States amid the influx of millions of migrants.
The proposed immigration agreement being negotiated by Lankford is said to include provisions that would increase the difficulty for immigrants to seek asylum, streamline the deportation process for the Department of Homeland Security, allocate funds for additional Border Patrol hires, and enhance the capacity for immigration detention.
Democrats are open to collaborating with the GOP on the legislation to secure increased funding for Ukraine. This presents a unique chance for Republicans to advance more stringent border policies with relatively less opposition from the Left during a Democratic presidency with a divided government. Nonetheless, staunch Republican figures, including Trump, are resistant to the idea of a bipartisan agreement.

On the day of the censure vote, Trump addressed a gathering of supporters in Las Vegas, suggesting that they hold him responsible for the breakdown of the border negotiation efforts.
A few days before, The Hill disclosed that in a gathering with the Republican conference, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) conveyed to his caucus that Trump is against them reaching an agreement, as he is opposed to President Joe Biden achieving a win.
He intends to use the matter as a focal point for his campaign. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) strongly criticized the ex-president, deeming it reprehensible. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), a collaborator with Lankford in the negotiations, cautioned fellow Republicans against prematurely withdrawing from the discussions due to concerns about Biden gaining a campaign triumph.
Critics of the proposal argue that it could permit tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants to enter the country before the Department of Homeland Security is compelled to implement stringent border controls.
Furthermore, the agreement would grant fast-tracked work permits to unauthorized individuals and furnish legal representation for Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC), all funded by taxpayers.
