Based on a recent Gallup Poll, a significant majority of 71 percent of Americans agree that gay marriage should continue to be recognized as legal. The backing for same-sex marriage has consistently exceeded 50 percent for more than ten years.
Notably, certain demographic groups display higher levels of support for legalizing same-sex marriage. For instance, among adults aged 18 to 29, an overwhelming 89 percent are in favor of recognizing same-sex marriage as legal. Additionally, 84 percent of Democrats and 83 percent of individuals who do not frequently attend church also support the legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
On the other hand, those who exhibit the lowest levels of support for same-sex marriage include 49 percent of Republicans and 41 percent of individuals who attend religious services on a weekly basis.
Additionally, there is a notable disparity in support for gay marriage based on educational attainment, with individuals who hold college degrees being significantly more inclined to support its legality compared to those without higher education. Moreover, residents of the Southern region tend to express less support for the legal recognition of same-sex marriage compared to individuals residing in the Midwest or the coastal areas.
It is worth mentioning that same-sex marriage has garnered substantial support across the United States, as evidenced by Gallup’s surveys conducted since 1996. Over the years, there has been a steady rise in support for gay marriage among the American population.
After the landmark ruling of the Supreme Court in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, gay marriage became legally recognized in the United States. To further solidify the status of same-sex marriage, President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan legislation that received support from twelve Senators and 39 Republican House members in the previous year.
This action was primarily driven by concerns that overturning the Obergefell decision could potentially eliminate nationwide protection for gay marriage. The new law aims to prevent such a scenario and guarantees that even if there are suggestions by Justice Thomas or the court to reexamine LGBTQ-related cases, the legal status of gay marriage remains intact.
