DHS Secretary Mayorkas Hit With New Impeachment Article Over ‘Reckless Abandonment’ Of Border Security

Rep. Andy Biggs, a Republican from Arizona, is submitting a new article of impeachment against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, charging him with breaking his oath of office and failing to uphold US immigration law.

The articles, which accuse Mayorkas of engaging in a pattern of behavior that is incompatible with his duties as an Officer of the United States, were originally published in 2021 by Biggs, who has consistently called for Mayorkas to be fired from his position.

Now that Republicans have taken control of the House and there have been a record-breaking 2.3 million interactions with migrants in FY 2022, including more than 251,000 in only December, the impeachment movement has been revived.

“Secretary Mayorkas has failed to faithfully uphold his oath and has instead presided over a reckless abandonment of border security and immigration enforcement, at the expense of the Constitution and the security of the United States. Secretary Mayorkas has violated, and continues to violate, this oath by failing to maintain operational control of the border and releasing hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens into the interior of the United States.”

Additionally, it charges him with violating the 2006 Secure Fence Act, which mandates that DHS take steps to establish and maintain operational control over the border.

Finally, it claims that he released illegal aliens into the US despite what Biggs claims to be an obligation to detain them, in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

The GOP Leadership has shown some potential support for the impeachment campaign against Mayorkas. In November, then-Speaker McCarthy declared that Mayorkas must step down or risk being impeached.
