Custodian Arrested After Hidden Camera Found In Elementary Restroom

After reportedly concealing a camera in the restroom, a custodian at an elementary school in Illinois was detained.

The camera was discovered on May 27 at Washington Elementary School in Park Ridge, Illinois, when a mother saw a cell phone next to the bathroom that was set to record.

After the Park Ridge Police Department conducted an investigation, Luis M. Rubio-Ortega, 37, was detained on Wednesday. Custodian Rubio-Ortega works at the primary school.

A female staff member at the school observed a cell phone near the toilet with the video camera in recording mode just before 11:40 am on May 27 as she was using the staff lavatory, according to the police.

Rubio-Ortega had placed the phone there, according to the inquiry that Park Ridge police launched.

Rubio-Ortega admitted to placing the phone in the lavatory with the goal of recording female staff members during a detective interview on Wednesday, according to the police.

He told authorities that he installed the camera in the staff restroom so that he could record the behavior of the women that used it. Since then, the custodian has been on administrative leave.

According to the police, Rubio-Ortega was charged with unauthorized video recording.

While no children were captured on the cell phone, two staff employees were, and police have been in touch with them.

Luis M. Rubio-Ortega was brought before a Skokie courthouse on Thursday for a bond hearing.
