This announcement comes alongside her commentary on the impact of the “Trump years” on the genre. Morris, known for her outspoken stance against conservative views, expressed her discontent with music being used as a divisive tool in cultural conflicts.
Furthermore, she even suggested that the popularity of Jason Aldean’s recent song, “Try That in a Small Town,” may have been driven not by genuine appreciation but rather by individuals streaming it as a form of opposition and political statement.
Ironically, while Morris criticizes others for conveying political messages through their music or activism, she herself has not refrained from making political statements. Last year, she targeted Brittany Aldean, the wife of Jason Aldean, who posted on social media expressing gratitude to her parents for not subjecting her to a path of lifelong medical intervention to change her gender during her childhood, as she identified as a tomboy.
Morris went as far as to label Brittany Aldean as an objectionable individual for her statement. When Tucker Carlson referred to Morris as an unconventional figure within the country music community, Morris capitalized on this by selling shirts featuring that phrase, generating over $100,000 in support of a pro-transgender organization.
During an interview with the LA Times, Morris discussed her perception that the country music genre has been resistant to embracing women, queer individuals, and people of color. Some have pointed out an apparent inconsistency in this statement, given Morris’ own successful career in country music as a woman. Additionally, they highlight the immense popularity of Taylor Swift, who is not only a woman but also started her career in country music.
Furthermore, in the past decade, the country music scene has seen the rise of Kacey Musgraves, an openly lesbian artist, as a major star. Notably, one of the most widely acclaimed songs in recent years, “Old Town Road,” blended elements of country and rap and was created by Lil Nas X, a gay black artist. These examples challenge the notion that the country music genre is closed off to diversity and inclusivity.
