Trump appeared in court in Miami on June 13 to face federal allegations involving secret documents. The Versailles Bakery, a Cuban-run restaurant where he dined after leaving the courthouse, extended a warm welcome to him. In anticipation of his 77th birthday on June 14, several patrons invited the former president to pray with them, while others sung “Happy Birthday” to him. In response, Trump called on his fans to join the fight against the country’s downfall and declared that he would pay for “food for everyone” at the eatery.
However, Jake Tapper, the host of CNN’s coverage of the event, was unimpressed. Once he realized the restaurant patrons were welcoming Trump with wide arms, he yelled, “The folks in the control room, I don’t need to see any more of that.” Having successfully halted the objectionable film, he then accused Trump of trying to turn his visit into “a spectacle… a campaign ad,” and reiterated that he had seen enough.
Trump has vowed to continue his 2024 presidential campaign despite mounting legal woes and continues to have widespread support. After his indictment on June 8, he widened his advantage in the polls showing he was the pick of conservative Republicans. He is now the preferred candidate of 61% of Republican primary voters, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis coming in far second with only 23%.
Many of his backers claim they now want to vote for him despite the indictment. Meanwhile, Trump’s welcome this week in Miami proved that he can still draw enthusiastic crowds even if he’s just going out to eat.
