According to authorities, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer was slugged by an unknown individual at a retail and entertainment location on Saturday.
“Earlier this evening, Mayor Fischer was punched by an individual while at Fourth Street Live,” the Louisville Metro Police Department reported on Facebook.
Mayor Fischer is presently in good health.
Late Saturday, the police department shared photographs of the suspect on Facebook and Twitter, inviting anybody with information on the attack to call an anonymous tip line.
The attack happened at Fourth Street Live, a Downtown Louisville facility that includes a food mall, restaurants, and bars.
Authorities and reports are uncertain about what led to the assault on the Democratic mayor of Kentucky’s largest city, and if it was a targeted or random incident.
Craig Greenberg, a mayoral candidate seeking to succeed Fischer after his term expires at the end of this year, asked the culprit to come forward.
“Tonight my thoughts are with the Mayor and his family. Whoever is responsible for this assault needs to turn themselves in. We cannot solve our disagreements with violence,” he tweeted.
Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to contact police via an anonymous tip line at 502-574-5673.
It’s unclear whether the Saturday attack was caused by an altercation.
Fischer has served his maximum term and will be replaced in a general election later this year. Craig Greenberg, the Democratic contender to succeed him, was similarly targeted earlier this year.
